British bank holidays are public holidays in Britain, the days of the year when traditionally many businesses close to enable the workers to spend time with their families. Why are they called Bank Holidays? The name Bank Holiday comes from the time when banks were shut and so no trading could take place. When did Bank Holidays begin? The first official recognition in law came about in 1871 with the Bank Holidays Act. Were there public holidays before Bank Holidays? Yes, the main Christian religious holidays that did not traditionally fall at a weekend, Christmas Day and Good Friday, were recognised as days of rest. These two days are still known as public holidays rather than Bank Holidays.
